The Value of a Portrait

August 31st, 2010

02-img_5565-bw2.jpgWith many inexperienced amateurs purchasing digital cameras and charging less and less for a session, we want to share the true value of a portrait. As a consumer, it is important to be educated in what you are paying for and what you are getting.

While many of us would not feel comfortable trusting our hair to a cosmetology student, our portraits will last much longer than any hair change we make.

Most of what we do, our clients never see. The actual session is such a small part of  the time involved in a portrait.

We do this every day.  Our clients may only do this once every year or even 5 years. It is important to hire a professional who will find out what you want and help you to achieve that.

Expenses:

  • helpful guides for clients including clothing and the displaying of prints in the home – A professional photographer does not like to leave your session to chance and will share helpful information to give you the best session possible. Many times this is purchased from professional writers.
  • software – It is not uncommon at all for a photographer to have over $1000 worth of software that needs to be continually upgraded, plus extras each year for giving you the most professional, and artistic images.
  • computer – The professional cameras continue to improve and constantly require updated software and computer systems. It would blow your mind to know how slow the large files can be to work with and the cost of continually upgrading.
  • camera – Most professional photographers have more than entry level digital cameras. Professional photography can be hard on a camera, especially if a photographer shoots in elements such as the beach.  This will require additional cleanings and new equipment.
  • lighting
  • props
  • reflectors
  • lenses
  • education – Education is a constant in the life of a true professional photographer.
  • insurance
  • licenses, fees
  • professional, legal forms
  • advertising
  • display samples
  • assistants

The ACTUAL time that a professional photographer puts into a session:

  • corresponding and telephone calls for forms and consulting before a session (30-60 minutes)
  • planning – a photographer will spend time planning and preparing for your session, including scouting, posing, correct equipment, etc. (45-60 minutes)
  • the session (1-2 hours)
  • choosing the best images, eliminating blinks, etc (1-2 hours)
  • professionally processing the images (6-8 hours)
  • ordering and packaging of prints (if ordered) (1-2 hours)
  • uploading images or making CD (1 hour)

childrens-photography-00001.jpgSo, at this point, we are looking at approximately 17 actual hours that go into a session, not to mention the time that a photographer spends additionally each week just to conduct business (advertising, website maintenance, education, ordering supplies, maintaining books and records, correspondence, telephone calls, exploring new industry information, etc.). While it appears that a photographer just shows up and works for an hour or two, there is so much more to what a professional photographer does.

Add to that the actual expenses that a photographer has, most of which you may not actually see because they are behind the scenes, and you will see why you will not find a professional photographer offering their services for next to nothing. They simply cannot afford to stay in business.

So, what makes a photographer worth the money? These are your portraits.  Life is fragile and fleeting.  One day these images will hold your memories.  These images will become your memories.  Most of what we remember, was captured in a picture. It’s not something best left to an amateur.

It is not likely that you will find professional portraits at chain department store pricing.  A professional photographer just cannot stay in business at those prices.  And at a chain department store, you will probably not find the artistic images that you are looking for in a 15 minute session from someone making minimum wage working there for the summer or for extra money over the holidays. Sometimes, we just have to make a choice.

You get what you pay for when it comes to professional portraits. They are an investment and will be one of  the very few purchases that you will still  have in 15, 20 years, or even a lifetime.

We have AMAZING clients and want say THANK YOU!

October 5th, 2009

As our way to say thank you for your kindness and support, we want to give you a small token of our appreciation.  Many of you feel like family.  Thank you for telling your friends about us and for your continued support over the years.

Since Christmas is fast approaching, we thought the perfect gift for you would be a Christmas card template.  We have two versions, a psd photoshop template, or a jpeg file.  These do require a little background with working with images and image software but what you would need to know is very simple.  We are currently working an instruction sheet for you. While it is simple to do, I’m not the best at writing the instructions.  You should hear me give directions.

You image file can easily be inserted, and you have a ready made 4×6 Christmas card ready to send to your friends and family!

Robert and Damara

What a gorgeous couple they are! Robert and Damara have known each other most of their lives, and I am so glad I could capture their relationship for them. They are so much fun and so in love. I had such a blast doing this shoot for them!

On a personal note, this is one of the most amazing young men you could ever meet, and he’s just like a son to me. I love him to pieces. I’ve known him since he was little…yeah, he actually used to be little once, if you can believe that. lol And, oh, the stories we could tell and pictures we could show. lol He was such a fun and great kid! And no matter how big or old he gets, he is still so amazing…always so kind and gentle. Oh, wait, I’m totally ruining the big, bad football reputation here. Sorry, Robert. lol And, yes, for those of you who are thinking he looks familiar, it’s Robert Quinn who recently graduated from Fort Dorchester. He really is a GREAT football player, and we are all so proud of him! Be sure to check him out come football season. He’s Robert Quinn #42 on North Carolina Tarheels.

I love you, Robert! Remember, we’re always here for you…praying for you…rooting for you…missing you and thinking of you.

A Fairy Tale…

February 7th, 2009

The Flash Player and a browser with Javascript support are needed..

Some of our clients may recognize this young man from our sessions. This is my oldest son, Devin. He and his most wonderful girlfriend Jerrika got engaged in November. Our clients are like family, so I wanted to share a few of their engagement pictures with you.

They have such a fairy tale story the way the waited for each other and are just so perfect together. I’m not sure if some of you are familiar with the Eric Ludy books, but he has one called “When God Writes Your Love Story”. Well, this is one of those stories. God is so faithful.

I watched Devin wait for her his whole life. He read books such as I Kissed Dating Good-bye and When God Writes Your Love Story, and he believed that God would honor his waiting and trusted Him for that perfect woman for him.  It wasn’t easy as he got older and still not one prospect in sight of what he thought was the perfect person for him while all his friends were dating, but he still waited.  And then one night at a Christian concert, he met her.  When he came home and told me about her, I knew the first night that there was something different about her.  I heard it in his voice and saw it his eyes.  And she could not be more perfect for him….even far beyond all he hoped and dreamed.  God is so abundantly faithful in all things.

I loved the beginning quote and thought it so perfect for their slideshow.

Isle of Palms Vacation Portraits on the Beach – Information to know if you are looking for beach rental vaction homes on Isle of Palms

January 6th, 2009

According to the City of Isle of Palms website, this is prohibited and large fines are being imposed. We know that many of our clients and others love to do this every year.  We hope you see this before you book your rental home.

Taken from the Isle of Palms website: “No business can be performed on the beach; therefore, professional photography and catering on the beach are prohibited.”

Well, it’s official. I heard it on the Oprah Show.

October 27th, 2008

When you find a look that you like, you should get yourself professionally photographed.

How to Get Your Sexy Back Makeovers aired today, and it was so fun to watch these women get back in touch with the woman inside. I also loved how the show realized the importance of photographing these beautiful women with their new looks.  What a confidence builder! Russel James was the photographer and did an amazing job!

This is a wonderful gift for a woman to give herself.  She is more often than not the one behind the camera, but this gives her a chance to have beautiful portraits of herself…a session just for her….and all about her.

Many of you know that I have been a long time advocate of women doing this.  We started doing “reveal the beauty within” sessions for women a couple of years back, and they are honestly some of our favorite sessions!  We have such a relaxed fun time!

So today, put yourself on the list.  Freshen up your makeup and hair, get a manicure and pedicure and schedule a portrait session just for you! You will be so glad you did!

My husband.

October 27th, 2008

He is usually the guy behind the scenes.  He scouts locations with me and is the official model for testing…whatever I need to test. lol Don't you just love how even though he has smiled for me a thousand times, he still looks believable? What a pro!
